This week: Rebel, CIty of God, and The Cat

One of the many reasons we opted to run a fundraiser was so we wouldn’t have the looming pressure of business loans. That means we can take risks, and play films we think our customers will like, even if we know there’s a chance the whole thing falls flat.

This week may be one of those times. Presales for Rebel and City of God are… modest, to say the least. But we believe in both films and we think you’ll feel the same, so we took the chance. Thanks for letting us be the kind of theater that can do that.

Rebel

We saw Rebel a few weeks ago, and immediately knew two things: First, it’s a fascinating film that defies expectations by fusing action-film sensibilities and musical interludes with heavy subject matter. Second, it was going to be a really hard movie to sell.

Rebel is a blunt instrument. A harrowing tale of radicalization dressed up like an action film. At first, the juxtaposition feels out of place, but as the film goes on it becomes easier to see, and respect, what directors Adil and Bilall are doing. Most anti-radicalization films are aimed squarely at an audience under no risk radicalization. Rebel wants to brak that trend. Adil and Bilall created a film that the disillusioned young men they grew up with would actually want to see.

Rebel plays daily, September 29 - Oct 5. Tickets

City of God

Much like Rebel, City of God isn’t afraid to mix flamboyant film craft with serious subject matter. A crime epic set in the Brazilian favella known as the City of God, the film tracks the rise and fall of underworld figures, willing and otherwise, over 20 tumultuous years. Often cited as one of the best films of all time, City of God is a true international classic.

City of God plays Sep 30, Oct 1, and Oct 2. Tickets

CInema City: The Cat

The Cat is a 1992 Hong Kong film from Lam Ngai Kai (Riki-oh and The 7th Curse). It’s a loose follow up to The Seventh Curse, but this time Wisely is on the trail of a cat from space who’s out to prevent universal domination by an evil space monster that can possess humans. It’s just as bonkers as you’d expect. Tickets are going quick, so pre-purchase is highly recommended for this one.

The Cat plays Wednesday, Oct 4 at 7:00. Tickets
