Sat (12/17) - 7:00 & Sun (12/18) - 7:00

Before Home Alone, There Was Dial Code Santa Claus.

Dial Code Santa Claus (AKA Deadly Games) came out in 1989, but not in the United States. Despite this, it built a reputation as the French nightmare version of Home Alone. Curiosity kept bootlegs in circulation, but it didn’t get a proper release until 2018, and we should all be grateful it did. Dial Code Santa Claus is more than a novelty, it’s a damn fine film with lots of heart to back up the madness.

Fri (12/16) - 7:00 & Sun (12/18) - 2:10

the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny Fucking Kaye.

Join the Griswolds for another disastrous “fun old fashioned family Christmas”.

Christmas Vacation may be the closest thing we have to a holiday tradition, in that we’ve played it two years in a row. That’s 100% of Christmases since we took over the theater.

Sun (12/18) - Noon

A notcool brunch holiday special

It’s time for another Notcool presents brunch show. Join us for lazy Sunday morning with Jon Favreau’s holiday classic Elf. Per usual we’ll have mimosas, coffee and donuts on hand.

Sun (12/18) - 4:20 & Tues (12/20) - 7:00

David Bowie stars in Nagisi Oshima’s remarkable drama.

A cast lead by David Bowie, Takeshi Kitano (Outrage) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed the film’s outstanding score), and a script co-written by Oshima and Paul Mayersberg (The Man Who Fell to Earth) make for a truly international production that explores Japan’s relationship to the west, and the consequences of repressed homosexuality.

Fri (12/16) - 9:15

The Hulk Hogan Holiday movie you thought you imagined.

After a reckless paintball game causes police to mistake millionaire Blake Thorn (Hulk Hogan) for a terrorist, Thorn disguises himself as a mall Santa to avoid capture. But when his trash-chute escape goes wrong, a brain damaged Thorn believes he was the real Santa all along. After beating few crooks for a cheering crowd, Thorn decides to use his strength for good, and rescue Sarah (Mila Kunis) and her orphan friends from the evil land developer of Ebner Frost and his geologist henchmen. I swear we didn’t make any of that up.

Sat (12/17) - 4:45 & Mon (12/19) - 7:00

From Satoshi Kon (Perfect BLue) - A harrowing celebration of imperfect people, and a call for inclusion.

In Satoshi Kon’s unconventional holiday classic, three people have their lives upended when they find a child in a dumpster on Christmas Eve. Without homes or families of their own, they decide to solve the mystery of the abandoned child, and set out in search of her parents. What follows is funny, heartfelt and harrowing in equal measure, and another reminder of Kon’s singular talent.

Sat (12/17) - 9:00 & Weds (12/21) - 7:00

Tim Burtons darker, wierder Batman is the best Christmas movie ever released in June.

A kid friendly marketing push left audiences sorely unprepared for Batman Returns, and the reaction was… mixed. As writer Daniel Water recalled “it was like, kids crying, people acting like they’d been punched in the stomach and like they’d been mugged. Part of me relished that reaction, and part of me to this day is like, oops.” But 30 years later, we can judge the movie for what it is: a strange, striking, gothic Christmas mood piece that stands among Burtons best.
