Session zero

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starts March 30.
Let’s make sure everybody’s ready.

We’re going to raffle off some nerd stuff.

For every Session Zero show you attend, you’ll get a raffle ticket for a drawing held on Thursday night, right before our first show of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Prizes range from dice, to D&D starter sets, to more dice (everybody likes dice).

For A Knights Tale, writer/director Brian Helgeland (who’s eclectic career ranges from 976-Evil to Mystic River) took the framework of a period adventure and threw out all the rules. The end result is a medieval underdog story full of 70’s rock and anachronistic dialogue. It seems daft, but thanks to a great cast and a surplus of charm, it absolutely works.

Conan the Barbarian is a surprisingly brutal adaptation of the pulp classics. After a band of raiders led by Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) exterminates his village, Conan must endure years of slavery on the Wheel of Pain. In time, he grows into an Arnold Schwarzenegger sized anti-hero in search of vengeance.

Willow is a classic fantasy of good and evil, filled with practical effects that still work their magic 3 decades later. It’s the kind of movie that works because it doesn’t re-invent the wheel. As you follow Willow (Warwick Davis) and Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) on their journey to the evil Queen, you know where things are going, but it doesn’t matter when the trip is such a joy.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves knows just how much fun fantasy can be. It’s unrepentant nerd-stuff that captures the fun of a good tabletop session, without requiring the viewer to have any idea what that means. It’s a hell of a trick, and Honor Among Thieves pulls it off.
