This Week at Cinemagic: May 16-22
Paracinema Presents: UNIVERSAL SOLDIER
Host Tony DiBern returns with another pulp favorite, the Jean-Claude Van Damme powered action blockbuster UNIVERSAL SOLDIER. Like usual, he’ll have unique art prints on sale, and a hyped-up intro to set the tone for this glorious slice of 90’s cheese.
Universal Soldier plays tonight (Fri, 5/16) at 7:00. Tickets
INHERENT VICE
Paul Thomas Anderson’s laid-back detective story returns! We didn’t truly appreciate this film until we watched it with a crowd in a theater. It has a weird energy that just takes over the room, and makes you realize just how funny and thoughtful a film Inherent Vice really is.
Inherent Vice plays Sunday (5/18) at 4:00, Monday (5/19) at 7:00, and Thursday (5/22) at 4:00. Tickets
FROM DUSK TILL DAWN
From Dusk till Dawn has been on our booking wish list for a minute. We found ourselves with an opening, and figured it was time to get this relentlessly entertaining Tarantino/Rodriguez collaboration on the big screen.
From Dusk Till Dawn plays Saturday (5/17) at 7:00, Monday (5/19) at 4:35, and Thursday (5/22) at 7:00. Tickets
The Burbs
It’s a minor miracle that a film starring Tom Hanks and directed by Joe Dante, that was made at the heights of their mainstream success, could be so damn weird. The Burbs is a black comedy, mystery, satire, drama mash-up that will keep surprising you, right to the end.
The Burbs plays Saturday (5/17) at 4:40, Sunday (5/18) at 7:00, and Tuesday (5/20) at 7:00. Tickets
Cinema City: Tiger on the Beat
Hong Kong films of the 80’s frequently mashed together contradictory tones in ways western film rarely dared, and Tiger on the Beat is a prime example. It’s a goofy buddy-action-comedy with a tender love story, a bleak addiction sub-plot, and chainsaw sword fight finale. It’s a hell of a good time, if you can hang with it.
Tiger on the Beat plays Wednesday (5/21) at 7:00. Tickets
