THIS WEEK: FEAR INTERNATIONAL
This week we take a world tour through the universal language of fear with films from South Korea, Argentina, Italy and Japan.
THE WAILING
The Wailing is a horror epic from South Korean director Na Hong-jin. It’s a dense, meticulously crafted film that merits multiple viewings, and moves with remarkable speed (despite its substantial runtime). It’s also terrifying, as the small mountain town of Gokseong descends into chaos at the whims of a force beyond their understanding.
P.S. It’s also one of Nick’s favorite films, from one of his favorite directors, and he’s been nagging to get it on screen for literal years.
The Wailing plays Friday (5/23) at 7:00, Sunday (5/25) at 3:50, and Monday (5/26) at 7:00. Tickets
SUSPIRIA
Dario Argento’s grandiose giallo took the already colorful world of Italian horror to new, vibrant heights. Suspiria tells the story of a young dancer who is admitted to a prestigious academy, where a series of grisly murders makes it clear that all is not as it seems…
Suspiria plays Saturday (5/24) at 7:00, Monday (5/26) at 4:45, and Thursday (5/29) at 7:00. Tickets
TERRIFIED
Last year, Demián Rugna had his first U.S. success with sleeper hit When Evil Lurks, but the Argentinian director has been a favorite of adventurous horror fans years. Terrified combines its own unique lore with an unnervingly mundane world, resulting in a film that more than lives up to its name.
Terrified plays Saturday (5/24) at 9:15, Tuesday (5/27) at 5:00, and Wednesday (5/28) 7:00. Tickets
Ring
Aka: RINGU
Ring introduced a generation of filmgoers to Japanese Horror, and a masterclass in creeping dread from director Hideo Nakata. Like many of its many films in the J-horror movement, Ring forgoes jump scares and builds layers tension, before culminating in an unforgettable finale.
Ring plays Saturday (5/24) at 4:45, Sunday (5/25) at 7:00, Tuesday (5/27) at 7:00, and Wednesday (5/28) at 4:50. Tickets
